Hey Putin! Go F*ck Yourself!

“Hey Putin! Go F*ck Yourself!” by Wit – A Music Review
 
The artist known as ‘Wit” delivers a sharp and ballsy new track for the world stage. Starting off with a pounding drum that quickly moves into additional percussion before exploding into a meaty, Sabbath-dark, guitar riff. Listeners should know the above description is the bulk of the music for a solid three minutes before a full band, underneath an audible scream, carries the audience through an extremely busy and moderately spastic breakdown (think Frank Zappa, loosely), and then into a heavy sustained chord that somehow feels like the crescendo pool splash and recovery of a water slide. Wow! What a Ride, Yo!

After all of that, what fans really want to know, especially with a title such as this, is what is the lyrical content? And I’m here to report that its strong. Basically, deriding Putin for his invasion of Ukraine. And sure, there are the expected references to Hi*ler, but more importantly, to Nikolas, the Czar of Russia. This proved more than a pleasant surprise.

The remainder are largely smart, well rhymed and melodied references to Putin’s actions in Ukraine and the effect those have had on not only the Ukraine-ians but the effect they’ve had on Russia herself, as well as the rest of the world. “A world once divided is now united against you.” That unification is demonstrated in the chorus where Wit stops the proceedings with his call to arms, “Hey Putin!” and then allows audiences to join in for the remainder of the title. This is the kind of anthemic gold that blows the roofs off of stadiums and keeps the PMRC-types shaking their heads and signs in the parking lot.
